• Red Delicious is a medium-sized apple, with a tall conical shape. The dark and intense crimson color makes it the quintessential red apple, and it is has a strong shelf appeal. Red Delicious has a sweet but very mild flavor, somewhat reminiscent of slightly over-ripe melon. The flesh is juicy and has a light crispness. The skin can be quite tough. Red Delicious is one of the most famous American apples, and one of the most widely grown apple varieties.

• Red Delicious apples are best used in fresh preparations, as their flesh does not hold up well when cooked. Add to green, fruit, and chopped salads. Use as an edible garnish on sandwiches, quesadillas, and burgers.

• The optimum storage temperature for apples depends on the variety, but all are within the range from 30 to 40 F. Apples are moderately susceptible to freeze damage. Temperatures more than 1 or 2 degrees below freezing should be avoided.

• Apple Cake

  Ingredients:

  5 apples
  2 cup flour
  2 cup granulated sugar
  1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  1 teaspoon baking soda
  2 teaspoons vanilla
  3/4 cup applesauce
  1/3 cup crushed walnuts
  

  Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease a 13 x 9 baking dish.
  2. Wash, peel, and slice the apples. Set aside.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cinnamon and baking soda.
  4. Mix in vanilla and applesauce.
  5. Fold in apples and walnuts.
  6. Spoon/scrape mixture into prepared 13 x 9 baking dish.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes.
